Class Description
Inspired by Seven Brides for Seven Bothers, our class will be using quilts to make dresses. Not only will such a dress keep students toasty during the long winter months, it will also look quite fashionable (if only it was the 1860s)!
A quilt will be needed for this class. You can get a quilt in multiple ways…ask a family member or friend for a quilt to repurpose (this could be a great way to keep a family heirloom in use!), look on FB marketplace…look often as sometimes a $30 one will pop up. Used store bought quilts will be pretty cheap, though they may not look as authentic. I will also be trying to aquire donations or cheaper quilts that girls can use if they are not able to aquire one another way. Feel free to message me with questions. *See below for sizing!!*
Class Requirements: Some sewing experience would be helpful but not necessary. A sewing machine would be helpful but not necessary.
Materials Needed:
- A quilt: for correct quilt size please use the following strategy…measure from belly button to floor and multiply by two, then add about 18 inches. Once you have this number find a quilt that’s smallest dimension is larger than that number. OR, If that sounds complicated, shoot for finding a queen size for an average height middle schooler. I would probably need a king for my height. A full would probably be great for an average eight year old. Finagling will be needed if it is too small, so bigger is always better IF POSSIBLE:).
- Thread: please get two spools of matching thread that will blend into the quilt you get.
- Optional: students may want a yard or two of coordination fabric depending on how things go.
