Class Description
Have you ever wondered “what is that plant/bug/tree/animal/mushroom?” or watched a bug go about it’s business for more than 5 minutes? Have you ever wondered how many edible plants you walk past every day?
In this class we will learn the basics of plant and animal classification and identification. Students will learn about edible/medicinal wild plants and foraging, and go on nature walks to collect and study specimens. There will also be a smattering of geology, etymology, entomology, and whatever other ologies and science we can cram in!
Lessons will start simple enough for younger kids, but additional information will be provided for those who want to know more and are more advanced.
Safety and respect for the outdoors is taken seriously – students will learn about toxins (poisonous and venomous) plants and animals and how to avoid dangerous lookalikes.
Class Requirements: None.
Materials Needed: Notebook and writing utensils for journaling/notes. Grubby clothes and shoes for outdoors. Bag or big pockets for carrying specimens if desired. Camera is optional.
