Class Description
This will be a two part class:
During the first half of class, students will have the opportunity to apply grammar concepts through the written word. We will be using IEW’s (Institute for Excellence in Writing) “Following Narnia, Volume 1: The Lion’s Song”. The theme based writing curriculum will help students learn to integrate IEW techniques with topics from the Narnia stories. Using the first three novels of The Chronicles of Narnia (The Magician’s Nephew, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and The Horse and His Boy), these 31 lessons encourage students to experience the enchanted land of Narnia through structure and style. There are 31 lessons, we are hoping to offer this class both semesters. We will work our way through as many lessons as possible, a family can finish the remaining lessons at home.
The second part of the class, students will learn and practice English grammar through fun, interactive grammar games. There will be a new concept introduced each week. Students will gain an understanding of parts of speech, sentence structures, and sentence patterns.
40 minutes of grammar fun + 40 minutes of writing bliss = A class with class in a classroom filled with classy classroom kids!
Requirements: Ages 11+, Positive attitudes, Willingness to participate, ask questions, and share their writings in class. There will be homework each week that students must be willing to complete at home and be prepared to share in class.
* NEW students may sign up for this class, however, it is important that parents know we will be continuing the class from where we stopped during first semester. The IEW program is adaptable to meet many learning levels. A new student not familiar with the program or new to writing, could easily use earlier checklists with their writing assignments and focus on the fundamentals first before adding dress ups and styles or they could jump right in where the first semester students are.
It has been such a blessing to see our current students so eager to share their writing with their classmates when at the beginning of the year they may have been a little reluctant. This is what the class is all about, allowing each student the opportunity to showcase their hard work.
